Stories have been a constant source of entertainment in my life both in consumption and production. It’s a cliche line but genuinely since childhood my joy has come from making stories, building lego and trains sets was never about the destination but instead what each thing was for. Consequently I’ve spent the last 4 years of my life specialising in screenplays, recently completing an MA in Screenwriting at the University of Arts London. Yet despite the excellent courses and years of investment, I realised whilst training that my true passion is with videogames.
Videogames offer such incredibly unique and amazing methods of engagement that go so far beyond what literally every other media platform is even capable of conceiving. I think that stories are a kind of game in themselves depending on your choice of approach. Consequently, all games have stories to tell no matter how simple or basic it may seem on the surface. Whether it’s the opening cutscene, the dialogue banter between party members, the esoteric item descriptions, any game can explore a story in a way that doesn’t impede gameplay. Though I personally believe that most games have the potential to have these two systems co-operate instead of simply compromising, and that’s exactly what I seek to do when given the opportunity.
It’s taken me a while through all my years of experimenting with different kinds of art and fiction to finally realise what it is that I want to do with my creative potential for the rest of my life. I consider storytelling to be not just to be optimal but vocational; it’s what I want to do, it’s what I am trying to do, and quite frankly it feels like the correct thing to say when I say that it is what I am going to do. I want to make things that will move people, and I am certain beyond doubt that I have what it takes to make that an achievement.
Personal Interests
My free time is exclusively spent either playing games (video or board, both are good), reading fiction, sparring with swords, or crafting something with my hands. Of the latter, a huge chunk of my hobbying time is spent making kit and performing with historical re-enactment groups.
Some of my favourite stories of all time are: Knives Out, The Realm of the Elderlings series, The Witcher Tales: Thronebreaker, The Return of the Obra Dinn, Pillars of Eternity, and the Don’t Escape series of Flash games.
